The Sunshine Orchestra is the marquee project of the A R Rahman foundation. Socially and economically deprived children with an aptitude in music are provided free musical training. Once equipped with the requisite skills, endowed with confidence, they are groomed to explore opportunities and build a career in music, as teachers or as performers. The children get a better understanding of their own and other cultural identities through the exploration of Classical & Western musical traditions. They benefit from the exposure to global cultural trends through their interactions with eminent international musicians and learning from them. Most importantly, the Sunshine Orchestra is a stepping stone to building harmony, unifying people, diluting communal and cultural differences.
The Sunshine Orchestra is also a symphony orchestra in the making. The larger dream of this project is to be a one of a kind “symphony” orchestra matching and surpassing global standards in music.
Since its inception in the year 2008, the foundation has adopted over 100 students, primarily from the MGR Corporation School, Kodambakkam and other institutions, who hail from economically underserved sections of the community. The students are trained by expert faculty in orchestral instruments including strings and brass, in an effort to empower them with life skills and provide them with a viable future career within the creative industries.
The orchestra is growing with it’s highly efficient trainers and enthusiastic students. It now has the strings section and the brass section of an orchestra and are looking forward to establishing the woodwinds section soon. It also has an outreach programme at the Gen cariappa school in CHENNAI where the senior students take classes for violin, viola and cello. Recently, a wing of the sunshine orchestra has been launched in Nagaland with the support of TaFMA with a memorandum signed at the Hornbill festival.
The Sunshine Orchestra - Strings Ensemble, was initiated in the year 2008 and from then on classes were offered in Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass. Whom we have here today to perform, are the senior batch of the strings section, trained, conducted & mentored by Mr. Srinivasa Murthy, an eminent puristic violinist. They have already demonstrated a level of measured professionalism undertaking recordings for film scores as well as performances across India and abroad including the United Nations Headquarters in New York. They are regularly engaged by the founder, Dr. A. R. Rahman, for his live concerts, films and other projects.
Getting to know Mahendra is a short and a long process at the same time. It is a short process because he exudes music and rhythm, he literally lives and breathes it and it cannot leave you as an indifferent spectator – your heart, soul and body respond to it. And it is a long process to learn and experience all the various ways in which he practices his musical art and shares it with others. People who hear him play for the first time get enthralled by the magic of his music, those who have enjoyed his performance numerous times enjoy it again and again. He is an enchanting mixture of a person who is aware of the power of his music, yet very humble and down-to-earth and he reaches out to people as he knows art can bring amazing changes to our lives. His generosity and embracing nature has allowed many people from all ages to experience the healing magic of hand drumming, rhythm and music, to come to a place and a moment in time where they can be themselves and grow their confidence.
