Enabling children to grow into self-aware, self-confident, skilful, and enterprising adults has always been a high ambition of great teachers and a challenge for all involved in education. During the last century in particular, music teachers and mentors have realised their uniquely advantageous position to unlock imaginations, guide youthful spirits and encourage future generations to explore self-expression, developing their talents and techniques, sharing their inspirations and creations, and growing in artistry and humanity. Yet alongside these golden opportunities are too many stories of the disturbed, abused and even abandoned children, each of which is deeply regrettable. As the last two years have caused the world to search for new means to communicate effectively, there has sadly also been an increase in the estrangement of the young through the very technology which can otherwise be the means to guide, teach and elevate their young lives. We all now are in need of revitalisation of our efforts to nurture the young, refreshment of our ambitions for them, and re-thinking of our policies and processes.
This Conference is one of many initiatives, each of them essential in the 21st century: its purpose and remit are equally high in ambition. It is now equally vital that practitioners can join online to share and discuss, to plan and propose how we can safeguard and enhance the development of the next generation, and how these formative adults can in turn rebuild the standards of social interaction which are evermore necessary on our evermore widely globalised planet.
